The Kane County Bar Foundation hosted its annual High School Mock Trial Program on May 2, 2025, at the historic Kane County Courthouse in Geneva. Eight teams from various high schools participated, including local students from Marmion/Rosary, Batavia, Bartlett, and Elgin. This long-standing program, which has been running for over 25 years, provides students with hands-on experience of the justice system. High school students take on roles of attorneys and witnesses in hypothetical criminal or civil trials, presenting their cases according to Illinois law.

Four trials were held simultaneously during the day of the competition, presided over by Kane County Judges Todd Tarter, Kimberly DiGiovanni, Divya Sarang, and John Dalton. The matches resulted in victories for Bartlett, Chicago Academy, Batavia, and Marmion/Rosary in their respective trials. Special guest Appellate Court Justice Sharon Oden Johnson observed the Chicago Academy team’s proceedings, providing students with a unique opportunity to present their case in front of a distinguished member of the judiciary, making the event even more valuable for the students.

Kane County Bar Foundation Director Ann Lobb emphasized the program's value in developing students' legal skills, critical thinking, and public speaking abilities. “The mock trial tournaments give the students a chance to think on their feet. Teams are coached by teachers and local attorneys, helping them gain expertise in courtroom procedures and legal argumentation.” The event also fosters collaboration and friendships among aspiring legal professionals.

In the closing ceremony, teams and individuals were recognized for their performances, with winners announced for each trial. The event highlighted the dedication and hard work of the students, as well as the commitment of the 16th Judicial Circuit and the Kane County Bar Foundation in promoting legal education and engagement among high school students.

The mock trials are open to the public, offering the community a chance to witness young people engaging seriously with the legal system. Schools interested in future participation can contact the Kane County Bar Foundation for more information.
